The amplifier is the engine of any audio system. Whether it is a modest integrated unit powering a bookshelf speaker system in a student flat, or a multi-kilowatt monobloc driving a set of large floorstanding speakers in a dedicated listening room, the amplifier's job is singular and fundamental: take a small signal and make it bigger, with as little distortion and noise as possible. When an amplifier fails, the music stops. Pro-Logic Technologies provides professional amplifier repair services across Nairobi, working on integrated amplifiers, power amplifiers, and preamplifiers from all major brands and eras.

Understanding Amplifier Failure Modes

Amplifiers fail in predictable ways. Understanding these failure modes is what allows our engineers to diagnose faults efficiently and carry out lasting repairs.

Output transistor failure is the most dramatic and most common catastrophic amplifier fault. Output transistors — the final stage devices that actually drive the speaker — can fail suddenly due to a speaker short circuit, sustained overload, or simply old age. When output transistors fail, they typically fail short, pulling the full supply voltage onto the speaker output terminals and potentially damaging the connected speakers as well as adjacent circuit components. Pro-Logic Technologies carries a stock of replacement output transistors for common amplifier designs and has the experience to replace them safely — including the critical step of re-biasing the output stage to factory specification after transistor replacement.

Electrolytic capacitor degradation is the most common gradual failure mode. Over fifteen to twenty-five years, electrolytic capacitors dry out, losing capacitance and gaining equivalent series resistance. The effects include increased distortion, reduced bass response, increased noise floor, hum, and eventually hard failure. A full recapping service — replacing all electrolytic capacitors throughout the amplifier — is both a repair and a substantial performance upgrade on aged equipment.

Protection relay failure results in the amplifier powering up and then immediately muting, or producing an intermittent, scratchy output as the relay contacts corrode. Relay replacement is a straightforward repair with a significant audible benefit.

Volume control and selector switch failure causes scratchy, intermittent, or dead channels when adjusting the volume or switching inputs. We clean, service, and replace potentiometers and selector switches as required.

Power supply failures — failed rectifier diodes, shorted smoothing capacitors, or failed transformer windings — result in a complete dead unit or a unit that powers up but immediately shuts down.

Integrated, Power, and Preamplifier Repair

We repair all amplifier types. Integrated amplifiers combine preamplifier and power amplifier functions in a single chassis; power amplifiers contain only the output stages; preamplifiers handle source switching, volume control, and signal conditioning. Each type has its own specific diagnostic challenges, and our engineers are experienced with all three.

Brands We Service

Pro-Logic Technologies repairs amplifiers from all major brands including Naim, Quad, Musical Fidelity, Cambridge Audio, Arcam, Rotel, Creek, Cyrus, NAD, Marantz, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, Onkyo, and many others. We also work on vintage equipment from brands that are no longer in production.
