Many modern televisions no longer include the composite or coaxial inputs that older VCRs use, but with the right cables or adapters, you can still watch VHS tapes on a newer TV.
What You'll Need
- VCR
- Composite RCA cables (red, white, yellow) or coaxial cable
- RCA-to-HDMI converter (if your TV lacks composite inputs)
- Power outlet for both devices
Step 1: Check Your TV's Available Inputs
Some modern TVs still include composite RCA inputs, often labeled "AV" or "Composite." If your TV has these, you can connect directly without an adapter.
Step 2: Connect Directly if Composite Inputs Are Available
Plug the yellow (video), red (right audio), and white (left audio) RCA cables from the VCR into the matching colored ports on your TV.
Step 3: Use an RCA-to-HDMI Converter if Needed
If your TV only has HDMI inputs, connect the VCR's RCA cables into the input side of a converter box, then run an HDMI cable from the converter's output into your TV.
Step 4: Power On Both Devices
Turn on the VCR and the television, then power on the converter box if you're using one.
Step 5: Select the Correct Input
Use your TV remote to switch to the composite input or the HDMI input connected to the converter, depending on your setup.
Step 6: Play a Tape and Adjust Tracking
Insert a VHS tape and press play. If the picture appears wavy or distorted, use the VCR's tracking adjustment buttons to stabilize the image.
Troubleshooting Tips
A blank screen usually means the wrong input is selected or a cable is loose, so recheck each connection. Poor picture quality from converters is common with older VCRs, since composite video was never high resolution to begin with. If the VCR won't play tapes at all, the internal belts or heads may need cleaning or servicing, which is common in older units.
