Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Prepare Your Computer

  • Mac: Make sure your Mac is updated to the latest macOS

  • Windows PC: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (or the Apple Devices app on newer Windows versions)

  • Use a USB cable that's known to work properly

Step 2: Turn Off Your iPhone

  • Press and hold the Side button (or Power button)

  • Drag the slider to power off

Step 3: Put iPhone in Recovery Mode

The button combination depends on your iPhone model:

iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and SE (2nd/3rd gen):

  1. Connect iPhone to computer via USB cable

  2. Quickly press and release Volume Up button

  3. Quickly press and release Volume Down button

  4. Press and hold the Side button until you see the "Connect to computer" screen (cable icon with computer)

  5. Release the button when the recovery screen appears

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus:

  1. Connect iPhone to computer via USB cable

  2. Press and hold both Side button and Volume Down button simultaneously

  3. Keep holding until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen

  4. Release when the recovery mode screen appears

iPhone 6s and Earlier (with Home button):

  1. Connect iPhone to computer via USB cable

  2. Press and hold both Home button and Top (or Side) button simultaneously

  3. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen

  4. Release when the "Connect to iTunes" screen appears

Step 4: Open iTunes and Locate Your Device

  • Launch iTunes on Windows or Finder on Mac

  • Your iPhone should appear in iTunes/Finder with a message that it's in Recovery Mode

  • You'll see options to Update or Restore your iPhone

Step 5: Choose Restore Option

  • Click "Restore" (not Update)

  • iTunes will show a warning: "Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all your data"

  • Click "Restore" again to confirm

Step 6: Download and Install Firmware

  • iTunes will automatically download the latest iOS firmware for your device

  • Wait for the download to complete (this may take 15+ minutes)

  • Important: If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat Steps 3-4 to put it back in recovery mode

Step 7: Complete the Restore Process

  • iTunes will install the firmware and restore your iPhone to factory settings

  • Your iPhone will restart automatically when complete

  • Follow the on-screen setup instructions to configure your device

Step 8: Set Up Your iPhone

  • After restore completes, you'll see the "Hello" screen

  • Sign in with your Apple ID (Activation Lock will require Apple ID verification)

  • Restore data from iCloud or computer backup if you have one

Important Notes

Data Loss Warning

  • Restore erases all data on your iPhone

  • If you haven't backed up your data, consider trying Update first instead of Restore

  • Update reinstalls iOS without deleting your data

If iTunes Doesn't Detect Your iPhone

  • Try a different USB cable or USB port

  • Restart iTunes and your computer

  • Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes

If iPhone Exits Recovery Mode During Download

  • If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode:

    1. Let the download finish completely

    2. Repeat Steps 3-4 to put iPhone back in recovery mode

    3. Resume the restore process

Activation Lock

  • After restore, you'll need your Apple ID and password to activate the device

  • This is Apple's security feature to prevent unauthorized use

Troubleshooting Tips

Problem Solution
iPhone stuck in recovery mode loop Try Update first instead of Restore
iTunes shows error Restart computer, update iTunes, try different USB cable
Download fails repeatedly Check internet connection, restart iTunes, try again
