Multi-Room Decoder Technology (Different Channels on Each TV) — How They Work

Instead of every television in the house being forced to show the same channel, a properly set up multi-room system lets each TV run its own decoder, tune its own channel, and even record its own programs — all from a single satellite dish and one subscription account.
The Basic Idea
A standard single-decoder setup has one dish, one LNB (the small device on the dish arm that receives the satellite signal), and one decoder connected to one TV. A multi-room decoder system builds on that same dish but adds extra decoders — one per additional television — so each room gets independent control.
What Makes It Work
Three components make multi-room viewing possible:
1. A compatible LNB. Standard single-view LNBs can only feed one decoder at a time. Multi-room setups need either a Dual-View LNB (supports two decoders) or a Unicable/SCR (Single Cable Router) LNB, which can serve four or more decoders over a shared cable network without signal conflicts.
2. Cabling to each room. Coaxial cable runs from the LNB (sometimes via a splitter or multiswitch) to each decoder location. This is the part that determines installation cost and complexity, since cable has to be run — often through ceilings or ducting — to every room that needs its own decoder.
3. Linked decoders. The decoders themselves need to "talk" to each other. - Smart LNB systems: Newer installations use a Smart LNB (also called an Explora LNB) built into the setup, which distributes signal to multiple decoders more efficiently and supports features like remote recording between rooms.
Things to Get Right During Installation
A multi-room decoder setup only performs well when the signal chain is installed correctly. Long cable runs weaken signal strength, so quality cable and, where needed, a signal booster matter. Splitters must be rated for satellite frequencies — ordinary TV splitters won't work. And every decoder needs to be correctly linked in software, not just wired, or you'll get "no access" errors on the secondary units.
