You play a video, start a call on loudspeaker, or try to play music — and silence. A phone with no speaker output is frustrating but usually fixable. The fault can sit anywhere between a muted software setting and a physically damaged speaker driver.

Rule Out the Obvious First

Check the volume. Press the volume up button several times. The phone may be set to silent or vibrate mode, or the media volume may be separate from the ringer volume and set to zero. On Android, there are typically three independent volume levels — ringer, media, and alarm — and setting one to zero does not affect the others.

Check Do Not Disturb and silent mode. Both suppress all sound output. Swipe down the notification shade and verify neither is active.

Check if audio is being routed elsewhere. If a Bluetooth speaker or headphones were recently connected, the phone may still be sending audio to that device rather than the internal speaker. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and disconnect all paired devices, then test the speaker again.

Try plugging and unplugging headphones. On some phones, a software bug causes the system to think headphones are permanently connected even after they have been removed. Plugging in and removing headphones can reset this. A toothpick gently used to clear any debris from the headphone jack (if present) can also resolve this on older devices.

Software Fixes

Restart the phone. Clears audio driver states that can cause silence without any visible setting change.

Play different types of audio. If a video has no sound but a phone call does, the media audio channel specifically is affected. Testing multiple audio sources helps isolate whether the problem is system-wide or app-specific.

Hardware Causes

If volume is set correctly, no audio routing conflict exists, and the phone has been restarted, the speaker hardware is likely at fault. Speaker drivers are small components that can fail from moisture, dust, or simply age. They can also be damaged by sustained high-volume use. Physical speaker replacement is a routine repair for most models and relatively affordable — typically a lower-cost fix than screen or charging port repairs.

Check the volume, silent mode, and Bluetooth routing before assuming hardware failure. These three causes account for the majority of "no sound" complaints that walk into repair shops unnecessarily.
