The tweeter is the most delicate and arguably most critical component in a loudspeaker system. Responsible for reproducing all frequencies above the crossover point — typically from 2,000 Hz upwards — the tweeter defines the air and detail in a speaker's high-frequency presentation, the crispness of cymbals, the breath of a vocalist, and the shimmer of strings. When a tweeter fails, these qualities disappear, and the speaker sounds dull, lifeless, and incomplete. Pro-Logic Technologies provides expert tweeter repair and replacement services across Nairobi.
Why Tweeters Fail
Tweeters fail for several reasons. Electrical overload is the most common — driving a speaker system at high volume for extended periods, or subjecting it to amplifier clipping, can exceed the tweeter's power handling capacity and burn out its voice coil. Amplifier faults — particularly DC offset at the output of a failing amplifier — are extremely destructive to tweeters, which have very low voice coil mass and minimal thermal capacity. Physical damage is also common, particularly in dome tweeters, where the soft fabric or metal dome can be pushed in by accidental contact.
Types of Tweeters We Repair
Soft dome tweeters — fabric or silk domes are the most common tweeter type in high-quality loudspeakers. A pushed-in fabric dome can sometimes be carefully pulled back to its correct shape without damage. A burned voice coil requires a complete tweeter replacement. We source replacement tweeters from specialist suppliers for a wide range of speaker models.
Metal dome tweeters — aluminium, titanium, or beryllium domes offer higher stiffness and extended high-frequency response but are susceptible to denting if contacted. A dented metal dome significantly alters the tweeter's frequency response and cannot be straightened without specialist tooling. Replacement is usually required.
Ribbon and planar magnetic tweeters — found in high-end speaker systems, these tweeters use an extremely thin metallic ribbon or film as both the diaphragm and the voice coil. They are extraordinarily delicate and require specialist repair techniques. Pro-Logic Technologies has experience working with ribbon and planar magnetic tweeter assemblies and can advise on repair versus replacement for specific models.
Horn-loaded tweeters — common in high-efficiency and professional speaker designs, these use a compression driver mounted in a horn-shaped waveguide. Compression driver diaphragm replacement is a well-established repair procedure that we carry out routinely.
Sourcing Replacement Tweeters
One of the challenges of tweeter repair is sourcing a replacement that matches the acoustic character of the original. Using an incorrect replacement tweeter will alter the frequency response at the crossover point and change the overall voicing of the speaker. Pro-Logic Technologies works with specialist audio component suppliers to source correct-specification replacement tweeters for a wide range of speaker brands and models, and where original replacements are unavailable, we carry out frequency response measurements to select the closest available equivalent.
If one or both tweeters in your speaker system are not producing sound, sound distorted, or have suffered physical damage, contact Pro-Logic Technologies for expert tweeter repair in Nairobi.
