A phone stuck in a boot loop shows the manufacturer logo, begins to start up, then restarts and repeats the process indefinitely. It never reaches the home screen. This is one of the more serious software faults a phone can develop — but it is frequently resolvable without professional help.

What Causes a Boot Loop

Boot loops occur when a critical part of the startup sequence fails to complete. Common causes include a failed or interrupted OS update, a corrupted system file introduced by a recently installed app, a full internal storage that prevents the system from writing temporary boot files, or — in some cases — hardware damage affecting the storage chip where the OS resides.

The Recovery Mode Approach

On most Android phones, boot into recovery mode by holding the power button and volume down (or volume up, depending on the manufacturer) during startup — before the logo appears. From recovery mode you have several options without losing data:

Wipe Cache Partition. This is always the first step. It removes temporary system files that may be preventing boot without touching any personal data. After wiping the cache, attempt to reboot normally.

If the cache wipe does not work, the next step is a factory reset from recovery. This erases all personal data — apps, photos, messages — and returns the phone to its out-of-box state. If the OS itself is intact but corrupted, a factory reset will break the loop and restore normal boot. Back up via Google or Samsung account sync before attempting, if the phone allows it between restart cycles.

When a Factory Reset Is Not Available

If even recovery mode is inaccessible, or if the factory reset does not break the loop, the OS may be so corrupted that it requires a complete flash — reinstalling the firmware from scratch. This requires connecting the phone to a computer and using manufacturer tools (Odin for Samsung, Mi Flash for Xiaomi, SP Flash Tool for Tecno and Infinix). Firmware files for most popular models sold in Kenya are available from the manufacturers' support pages or reputable community sites.

Flashing firmware is a more advanced procedure with some risk if done incorrectly. Most phone repair shops in Nairobi can perform a firmware flash quickly and at reasonable cost if you prefer not to attempt it yourself.

Hardware Causes

A boot loop that persists after both a factory reset and a firmware flash points to hardware — typically a failing eMMC storage chip where the OS is installed. This is a motherboard-level repair and warrants a professional assessment to determine whether repair cost is justified relative to the device's value.

Wipe the cache partition first — it resolves a significant share of boot loops. Escalate to factory reset, then firmware flash, only if necessary.
